Menswear Special: Purple Reign

A couple days ago, I talked about how pink is such a flattering color for just about every woman’s skin tone. So I figured it would only be fair to talk about purple for you guys…which is actually the only truly universally flattering color. This means there is a shade of purple out there that works on literally every person on the planet. Purple also happens to be such a chic and fashion-forward way for any guy to up his wardrobe game. It isn’t quite pink, but it also isn’t run of the mill blue or grey. It beautifully lends itself to ties, dress shirts, casual polos, and even shorts (examples of all to follow!), and pairs perfectly with other colors like beige, white, grey (light grey goes with darker purple, and charcoal grey goes with lavender and lilac), black, chocolate, and olive/army green.

If you haven’t already incorporated this fun color into your closet, a great place to sort of ease into wearing it is with a tie. A high-end tie can 100% make or break a dressy or professional outfit, and purple signifies strength (and is way cooler than asserting yourself with an expected red tie…) but also shows you aren’t afraid to experiment with fashion a little. So don’t ever cheap out on ties, even if that means you end up only owning a handful of really good ones. This one from Zegna will hold a classic or Windsor knot because of its thickness, and has the most sophisticated geometric tile pattern. Wear it with a grey or blue pinstripe suit, a really light lilac or crisp white shirt, and either brown or black accessories (shoes, belt, etc)…

Speaking of lilac shirts…this one from HUGO by Hugo Boss is such a phenomenal shade of purple and really stands on its own (meaning it doesn’t even need a tie). It’s slim fit will up your fashion quotient even further, and it can be styled with anything from a great pair of jeans and white sneaker-shoes for a casual night out, to your best blue checked suit and a contrasting tie for an important meeting with clients…

Looking to bring this hue into your more casual side? There is nothing better than a classic fitted Ralph Lauren Polo. Whether you are a collar-up or a collar-down kind of guy, these pique polos will forever be unmatched. This darker, saturated shade of purple works great whether you are dark-skinned with dark hair or a fair blonde hoarding the SPF 100. Wear it with jeans, with linen pants (think light khaki or dark olive), with heathered chambray-blue flat-front shorts, you name it, this works…

And lastly, about those shorts. I feel like most men think shorts should only be certain colors (black, grey, camo, etc). But a pair of washed-out, barely-lavender shorts like these from Bonobos, are super cool and just different enough to garner the good kind of attention. Wear them everywhere…on a boat, walking around the city, to a bbq…you get the idea. And what to pair them with? Try a black polo, a medium grey fitted t-shirt, or a white linen button down (untucked, please!) with the sleeves rolled up.

See? This is why purple reigns…
